Model Overview
The Toyota Yaris is the Japanese brand's entry-level, subcompact model. There are two distinct versions of the Yaris. The hatchback is all Toyota, but a sedan variant is engineered by Mazda. The more common hatchback has useful space and refreshingly simple secondary controls, and good visibility boosts its user-friendliness quotient, too. Then, there's Toyota's penchant for bulletproof reliability and efficient operation.

Reliable, GREAT on gas, more spacious than you think once seated inside

Overall Score
Good car and will last years with occasional repairs as long as you do your maintenance and oil change as required. Toyota has a maintenance schedule I follow for the most part. Never any problems with engine or major parts only brakes, minor body issues. Have hit a raccoon just bent the license plate. Not a sexy car but you know its gonna get you where you need to be. Stuck in a snowbank...just push it out , no need for tow truck or truck to pull.

Issue:
This recall is for certain block heater kits installed on certain vehicles or sold as accessories at Toyota or Lexus dealerships.
On certain vehicles, the engine block heater cable may not have enough heat protection and could be damaged by high temperatures. If this happens, the cable could short circuit while plugged in, and cause the wiring to overheat or melt.

Safety Risk:
Engine block heater wiring that overheats or melts could create the risk of a fire.
Corrective Actions:
Toyota recommends that you should stop using the engine block heater immediately. Toyota will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer to disable the engine block heater. For some vehicles, the corrective actions for this recall are under development. For others, a new engine block heater cannot be installed, and the owner will receive a refund of the purchase price of the engine block heater.

Issue:
Over time, the wiring to the side airbag sensors in the front doors could corrode. This could cause the front seat-mounted side airbags and curtain shield airbags not to work properly.
Note: This problem would cause the airbag warning light (SRS warning) to turn on.

Corrective Actions:

This could cause the airbag to deploy with more force than normal. As a result, if the vehicle were involved in a collision that warrants airbag deployment, fragments could be propelled toward vehicle occupants, and the airbag assembly could be damaged, preventing proper function. These issues could increase the risk of injury. Correction: Dealers will replace the passenger frontal airbag assembly.
Note: Canadian climate results in the propellant degrading slowly. The recall is being conducted as a precaution to address future risk, and is expected to replace airbag inflators before their function would be affected. Matrix model vehicles may have had the original front passenger airbag inflator replaced as a “like-for-like” replacement under a previous recall as a temporary remedy while evaluating a permanent remedy. These vehicles will receive the permanent remedy passenger airbag assembly under this recall.

On certain vehicles, the electrical power cords of some dealer installed block heaters may have been improperly manufactured, causing the wires to contact each other, resulting in a short circuit. A short circuit could lead to a fire which would increase the risk of injury and/or damage to property. Correction: For vehicles where the subject block heater was approved for installation, the dealer will replace the block heater assembly with a new one of an improved design. For vehicles where the subject block heater was not approved for installation, dealers will remove the block heater assembly. In the interim, until the remedy can be performed, dealers will cut the plug end from the block heater cord to disable the block heater's operation.

On certain vehicles, the front strut mount bearing components may be damaged when a high load is applied to the strut, such as when the vehicle is driven over a large bump. If the vehicle is operated with a damaged bearing, it could cause the upper strut rod assembly to separate, resulting in a loss of vehicle stability which would increase the risk of a crash causing injury and/or damage to property. Correction: Dealers will replace the strut mounting bearing with improved ones. If damage is found on the bearing, dealers will also replace the strut and front suspension support sub-assembly.

On certain vehicles, inconsistent application of grease during the manufacturing process could cause the driver's side power window master switch to stick or become inoperative due to electrical contact point wear. This could cause debris to accumulate between the contact points, potentially resulting in an electrical short circuit. This could cause the bolts to become loose and detach from the hub assembly, which could damage the rear brake components. On certain vehicles, a relay within the electric power steering control module could short circuit and fail. The sudden loss of steering power assist would trigger a warning lamp to illuminate and a buzzer to sound. A vehicle experiencing a loss of steering power assist would revert to a manual steering mode which would require greater driver effort, especially at low vehicle speeds. A loss of steering power assist could ultimately result in a crash causing property damage and/or personal injury. Toyota Canada, through its network of dealerships, offered for sale an accessory cruise control unit manufactured by Rostra Precision Controls, Inc., Model AP800 for 2006-2010 Yaris models. The Rostra accessory cruise control unit is mounted to the left of and below the steering wheel, behind the dashboard (below the cup-holder) with a switch on the steering column to enable the driver to activate it. Rostra has confirmed that, in very rare circumstances, when a mobile two-way radio (licensed for use by emergency personnel, under specific regulatory conditions and frequencies in Canada) is operated in the vehicle, the engine speed (RPM) can fluctuate or vary mildly, and for a short period of time. This can occur when the mobile handheld two-way radio is operated in the "transmit" mode at certain specific frequencies in very close proximity to the Rostra accessory cruise control unit under the dashboard. Also, if this condition does occur, the driver may notice a Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) on the dash and a reduction of engine power, allowing the operator to drive the vehicle to the shoulder or another safe location. Toyota has confirmed that this problem is not due to a defect in the vehicle's original equipment nor does this condition occur where a handheld Citizens' Band (CB) radio, cell phone or Bluetooth transceiver is operated in the vehicle. Correction: To ensure continued customer confidence in the safety and quality of their vehicle, Toyota Canada recommends that the Rostra accessory cruise control unit be removed from the vehicle. The removal of the Rostra cruise control unit will be performed at no cost and the original purchase price of the system will be reimbursed to owners. This action is a Customer Satisfaction Campaign and is not being conducted as per the requirements of the Motor Vehicle Safety Act.
